All praise is due to Allah (s.w.t) and the peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w).
Allah (s.w.t) mentions in the Qur’an, the story of Yusuf (a.s).
“Remember when Joseph said to his father, “O my dear father! Indeed I dreamt of eleven stars, and the sun, and the moon—I saw them prostrating to me!” (S.12, V.4)
In another verse Allah (s.w.t) says:
“And two other servants went to jail with Joseph. One of them said, “I dreamt I was pressing wine.” The other said, “I dreamt I was carrying ˹some˺ bread on my head, from which birds were eating.” ˹Then both said, “Tell us their interpretation, for we surely see you as one of the good-doers.” (S.12, V.36)
Allah (s.w.t) continues with the story by mentioning the dream of the king of Egypt:
“And one day the King said, “I dreamt of seven fat cows eaten up by seven skinny ones; and seven green ears of grain and ˹seven˺ others dry. O chiefs! Tell me the meaning of my dream if you can interpret dreams.” (S., V.43)
In surah Saffat, ayah 102, Allah (s.w.t) says:
“Then when the boy reached the age to work with him, Abraham said, “O my dear son! I have seen in a dream that I ˹must˺ sacrifice you. So tell me what you think.” He replied, “O my dear father! Do as you are commanded. Allah willing, you will find me steadfast.” (S.37, V.102)
The Prophet (s.a.w) has said that the prophecy has ended with me, but the good news will keep coming from Allah (s.w.t).
The verses and hadiths mentioned above relate to dreams. In these dreams Allah (s.w.t) is revealing the future events to the people of that time.
Furthermore, dreams are an important part of our life because they contain hidden meanings and messages. Meanings can relate to one’s worldly life or one’s life in the hereafter. Allah (s.w.t) communicates with us through these dreams. For example, Prophets have seen dreams related to their communities (ummah), a king might see a dream related to his kingdom or one might see a dream related to his family.
Allah (s.w.t) has hidden a person’s secrets and He (s.w.t) reveals them through dreams regarding the future.
The knowledge required to decipher dreams, is only given to a special group of people by Allah (s.w.t). This knowledge was not only given to Yusuf (a.s) but to every Prophet as they could tell the difference between real dreams and meaningless ones.
There are 3 types of dreams one can see:
- A dream that comes from shaytan (the devil) where he beautifies and shows it to the person.
- A dream that comes from the dreamer’s inner-self and nafsani (subconscious).
- A true dream that comes from The Mercifull Allah (s.w.t).
Occasionally, Shaytan (the devil) comes in the person’s dream with the intention to boost their pride or arrogance or to instill fear into the person. But in reality those dreams do not have any meaning.
The second type of dream as mentioned previously, is that of a person’s daily visualisations, thoughts, fears, worries, anxieties and other emotions etc. These types of dreams do not have any meaning either.
The third type of dreams are revealed directly from The Merciful Allah (s.w.t). These dreams usually occur during a peaceful and deep sleep, during which one’s soul comes out and flies. One flies in the realm of this dunya (world) and then up in the heavens where lies cannot reach. As the soul raises beyond the dunya (world), it sees true phenomena that are with the malaika (angels). Allah (s.w.t) shows visions which will be revealed in the future.
The meaning of True Dreams falls into these two categories:
- Glad Tidings
- Warnings
And for this reason, the Prophet (s.w.t) said that the Prophecy has ended but the glad tidings will continue; the glad tidings being good dreams seen by the believers, or even true dreams (warnings) that Allah (s.w.t) shows to non-believers, like the dream seen by pharaoh in the story of Prophet Musa (a.s).
Dreams can only be interpreted by people who are specialized in the field – by someone who has studied extensively the sciences of Tafsir of the Qur’an, the Hadiths of the Prophet (s.w.t) and the dreams of the previous Prophets that are mentioned in the Qur’an. After a thorough study of the tafsirs and through personal experiences, Allah(s.w.t) gifts one with the ability to interpret dreams successfully.
There are 2 aspects to dream interpretation:
- Strong and sound knowledge
- Gift from Allah (s.w.t)
Through this interpretation, they may come true with the will and permission of Allah (s.w.t).
The Prophet (s.a.w) said:
“Dreams are attached to the foot of a bird until they are interpreted, then when they are interpreted they come to pass.”
It means that once the dream is interpreted it comes down in the realm of the dunya (world) and materialises.
Allah (s.w.t) says in the Qur’an:
“And when he reached maturity, We gave him wisdom and knowledge. This is how We reward the good-doers. (S.12, V.22)
Here Allah (s.w.t) is specifically mentioning the knowledge of the dream interpretation.
In dreams, Allah (s.w.t) has left hidden messages, therefore only few would be able to decrypt this secret language.
The language of dreams is like a person who can speak a unique language and understands its true meaning and messages in it. It is important that the dream should be told to a person who interprets it with sincerity and knowledge, not through his nafs (ego).
Our team of professionals here at “Explain My Dreams “ is strong with over 15 years of experience and hundreds of dreams interpreted. We ask Allah (s.w.t) to accept this humble effort and make it beneficial for the ummah, and for the wider humanity.
